Is your vision becoming a bit hazy as you age? Trouble with night driving and needing a brighter light while reading are things many older people can relate to. The National Institute on Aging provides valuable information on common eye problems you may experience as you age and lists steps you can take to protect your eyesight. Below are five precautions.

1.   Watch what you eat.
Believe it or not, key nutrients play an important role in your eye health. Foods rich in omega fatty acids, such as fish and nuts, and leafy green veggies help ward off dry eyes, macular degeneration and even cataracts. Vitamins A, C and E are good for your eyes too because they help defend against night blindness and promote overall eye health. So, start adding eggs, whole grains and citrus fruits to your grocery list!

2.   Wear sunglasses when you’re outside.
Sunglasses keep your eyes safe from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. UV rays increase your risk of developing cataracts, age-related degeneration and even cancer of the eye and eyelids. Bonus, sunglasses also help shield your eyes from debris and other drifting particles. Needless to say, it’s time to invest in this outdoor accessory if you haven’t already.

3.   Don’t smoke.
Most people don’t realize that smoking can cause vision loss, even leading to serious eye diseases or blindness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains the long-term damage smoking can cause to your body.

4.   Maintain a healthy weight.
Being overweight has been known to cause Type 2 Diabetes, which can wreak havoc on your eyesight and lead to cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. Symptoms can include blurred vision, floaters and even blindness. Prevent these eye conditions by upping your activity level. Simple exercises like walking can do your eyes and your waistline some good.

5.   Schedule routine eye exams with an eye care professional.
Having your eyes regularly checked by an ophthalmologist or optometrist is the best thing you can do to protect your eyesight. Thousands of RIPEA members are currently enjoying the advantages of RIPEA’s Vision Plan. Not yet a member? Join today to access RIPEA’s affordable vision benefits and more!
